Sami Välimäki

Country: Finland
Date of birth: 16/06/1998

Sami Välimäki shot to prominence by winning only his sixth European Tour start – at the Oman Open – in February 2020 and went on to win Rookie of the Year.

The Finn, who secured his European Tour card at Qualifying School in 2019, beat Brandon Stone on the third hole of a play-off to secure the win and move up to 159 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

The Finnish prospect joined ISM in March 2019, two months after the youngster turned professional, and secured European Tour status for 2020 at Qualifying School.

Valimaki was in the top 10 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings in 2018 and, having taken part in military service in Finland at the end of last year, turned professional in January.

He recorded his first professional victory at the Open Casa Green Golf on the Pro Golf Tour in Morocco and went on to record three more victories on the tour, finishing second on the Order of Merit.

Sami made his European Tour debut at the KLM Open and got the 12th European Tour card at Qualifying School in November.

After his win in Oman, they clocked up successive second places at Celtic Manor – sixth at the Celtic Classic and second at the ISPS Handa Wales Open – to help secure a major debut at the US Open at Winged Foot.

A share of fifth at the DP World Tour Championship saw him finish his debut year in 11th place on The Race to Dubai.
